Gigs
- Tommy Ill - Album release gig with 47 Diamantes and Golden Axe at Mighty Mighty, 24 September. I have a scar on my shin from this gig, thanks to some girl and her clumsy high heel stomping. It was worth it.
- Hawnay Troof with 47 Diamantes and Sets at Mighty Mighty for Orientation in March
- Sage Francis at SFBH, 23 October. He even made me tear up a bit.
- Xiu Xiu with James Duncan at Whammy in Auckland, 10 September
- The best gig would probably have to be Bang Bang Eche, Bandicoot and Crackhouse 5 at Mighty on June 4. I think it was Bandicoot’s last gig and I’m really pleased I got to see them before they broke up.
- The Golden Awesome at Mighty any of the multiple times we saw them
- Tourettes with Gaytime and John the Baptist at Mighty, 26 March, followed the next night by Tourettes doing spoken word at Happy
- Richard Youngs at Happy, October 30
- Telepathe at SFBH, January 5
- The XX and Daniel Johnston at Laneway Auckland, February 1
- This year was amazing for live hip hop. I got to see RZA, Talib Kweli, Jean Grae (twice!), Pharoahe Monch and Raekwon as well as the others I mentioned above.
Movies
- La Jetee
- My Dinner with Andre
- Gainsbourg
- New York, I Love You
- A Single Man
- Love Exposure (I’m not sure whether I actually liked this, but I’ve not seen anything else like it, so it deserves a mention.)
- Everyone Else
- Summer Wars
- I Am Love
- Around a Small Mountain
- The Social Network
- The Tree
- Howl
- Scott Pilgrim vs The World was good in a it’s-a-spectacle, don’t-think-about-it-too-much kind of way. Yeah! I was really excited about it at the time. I even wooped-and-hollered when it turned out to be the mystery movie that we’d bought tickets for.
TV
I watched UKTV a _lot_. I watched TV in general quite a bit. MySky, I love you.
- Misfits (C4)
- Skins (C4) - the ending of season 4 was totally ridiculous, but still.
- Doctor Who (Prime) - Matt Smith <3
- Kingdom (UKTV) - the kind of TV I like to watch before I go to sleep. That probably sounds bad, but it’s just a very sweet drama based in a little Norfolk village.
- Beautiful People (UKTV)
- Free Agents (UKTV)
- Peep Show (UKTV)
- Californication (TV3) - Oh, Hank.
- Desperate Romantics (UKTV)
- Dollhouse (C4)
- NZ’s Next Top Model (TV3) - So ridiculous, yet so pleased that Danielle won.
- I also watched Shortland Street regularly, thanks (no thanks?) to MySky. I kind of love-to-hate it.
- I’m sure I’m missing something here
Book-type-things
I ended up reading more graphic novels than books.
- Our Tragic Universe - Scarlett Thomas (my best read of 2010)
- Y: The Last Man 1-4
- Scott Pilgrim 1-4
- Player One: What is to Become of Us - Douglas Coupland
- Phonogram, Volume 1: Rue Britannia
- The Magicians - Lev Grossman (I really loved this book up until they left school - then, not so much, but felt like I had to finish it.)
I’ve just started Just Kids by Patti Smith and Zero History by William Gibson and I’m expecting these to make the list, too.
Websites
- Gucci Goth - kind of sums up a lot of the music and fashion I’ve found pleasing this year.
- Down to the Wire - history of the internet in New Zealand.
- Fuck Yeah Menswear
- L-A-N Magazine’s Tumblr. Can’t wait to receive issue two of their magazine in the post.
- DIS Magazine - This one is new to me and I have a lot more reading of it left to do, but what I’ve seen/read so far has been great.
- I feel like I’ve forgotten something here, too.
Apparelly goodness
- Splatter-print dress from ASOS
- Focus Optometrists on Taranaki St
- My new Spirograph print top
- Occhiali on Nuffield St
- My new Chloe glasses

- Karen Walker ‘Helter Skelter’ sunglasses
- Striipe Mary T shoes in grey, that I wish were still stocked in NZ so I could buy multiple pairs!
- Drooled over pictures of Christopher Kane’s galaxy print stuff that I will never own
- I continued my scarf obsession. Favourites were a gigantic grey marle t-shirt cotton scarf, this one from Something Else by Natalie Wood, and a delicious, yet obnoxiously bright print scarf in this fabric from WORLD.
